Bay SensorTec presents innovative bst rail acceleration sensor for the highest safety standards in the rail sector

Product innovation: acceleration sensor with a measuring range of +/- 0.2g

Eching, 29/02/2024

Bay SensorTec GmbH develops and produces high-quality acceleration and angular rate sensors as well as inertial measurement units (IMUs) made in Germany and sets standards in terms of technology, innovation and quality with decades of experience and expertise in-house. Bay sensors have proven themselves internationally in the automotive, energy supply, rail and aviation sectors, among others.

Bay SensorTec is currently presenting a product innovation for the rail sector: the BST RAIL, an intelligent, ultra-robust acceleration sensor for high-precision monitoring in a measuring range of just +/- 0.2g.  The specially developed electronics of the new sensor enables rail vehicle operators to detect deviations at a particularly early stage and perform highly efficient predictive material testing and maintenance. The BST RAIL offers superior safety; its low measuring range is currently the ultimate in the acceleration sensor sector. This means that any problems can be recognised and rectified at an early stage so that trains and passengers reach their destination safely.

BST RAIL is based on the latest microsystem technology (MEMS) and achieves extremely high signal resolutions in the smallest measuring ranges of up to +/-0.2g, which leads to highly precise measurement results. With the BST RAIL, very precise analyses can be made, for example, of the acceleration behaviour of trains or ground feedback or the condition of the rails. This allows clear quality statements to be made about the running behaviour of the train, rails or wheel tyres and their condition and position at a particularly early stage.

Despite its very small, lightweight (less than 100g), compact design, the sensor is ultra-robust, long-term stable and extremely shock-resistant (up to +/- 2000g) thanks to MEMS chips. Even under strong temperature fluctuations, the measurement signals remain extremely stable and the housing is ultra-robust.

The new bay sensors are suitable for either current or voltage signals (with 4-20 mA current output, 0.5-4.5 V or +/-5V voltage output as well as for static and dynamic acceleration measurements; they have high interference immunity even with increased EMC* requirements and are easy to integrate into systems and machines.

The BST RAIL sensors can also be adapted to customer-specific requirements, for example with regard to filters (e.g. RC element) or IP protection classes (up to IP67); multi-pin connectors to MIL standard with bayonet lock are optionally available.

Bay SensorTec also offers sample assembly options for testing purposes, including preliminary functional tests. The company has an in-house calibration laboratory (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 accredited), which can also perform DAkkS-accredited calibrations in accordance with the DKD-R 3-1 guideline for measurand acceleration. If sensors are to deliver highly precise measurement results over long periods of time, they need to be calibrated periodically.

As with all sensors, Bay SensorTec’s personal customer service guarantees short response and delivery times for the BST RAIL.

“Acceleration sensors are a key safety factor in the rail sector. In order to offer the highest possible accuracy and safety standards, we wanted to develop a new sensor that reacts to even the smallest static accelerations. We are very proud that we have succeeded in doing this with the BST RAIL,” says Peter Bay, Managing Director of Bay SensorTec.

The new BST Railway sensor will be available from mid-2024.
